Actual scary movies4/11/2023 ![]() While I don't have an epic story to pair with it, The Exorcist is without a doubt one of the most viscerally frightening things that I've ever seen. And, like my one friend with Sinister, we chased it with a "happy" movie (this time the far less awesome House Bunny). I think that it helped more with discipline than anything else I ever did with them. To this day, I can only imagine what it must have been like from the other side of things: your RA brings a girl to his room, wome hours later there's a sudden, blood curdling scream that is just as suddenly silenced. She was mostly fine until the very end, when she screemed bloody murder in a sustained, raised voice until I was forced to clamp my hand down over her mouth to silence her. My now-girlfriend was watching it with me in my room while I was woeking as an RA. There is the prestige, elevated fine art of horror seen in things like The Shining and Hereditary the gross-out splatter horror of Dead Alive and Evil Dead the psychologically twisted. Quarantine is another that I've had a lot of luck with in the past. There are some extremely effective scares and fresh deliveries of otherwise common fright-flick molds because, when in doubt, turn to international flavors for something original. It is an incredibly well-shot, well directed, well written and well acted movie, knowing full well how long to hold a tense moment and when to release it. Another friend basically watched it on a continuous loop for over a year after ai showed it to her (on her phone while at work / driving, on tv while at home, consistantly averaging about twice a day). She still had horrific nightmares for weeks and swore off horor for the better part of a year (for reference, The Shining is one of her favorite movies). I showed it to a horror-loving friend of mine a while back and it scared her so much that we had to chase it with something happy and light (in our case, Megamind).
